A Shorts Explanation: Smiling Through.

I love how despite the immense heat, scratchy dryness and travel tiredness, she remained incomparably optimistic, grateful and beautiful.

Perhaps one of my favourite photos, certainly of Menna. This was taken whilst travelling through the undeniably tense region of Xinjiang Province, having just finished our contract in Xiangyang.

Turpan was the penultimate destination before we traveled back to Europe, and what a strange place it was. Not only is it the hottest place in China with temperatures recorded at well over 40C, but it is the second lowest point on Earth, sitting 154 meters below sea level.

Whilst walking through the Jiaohe Ruins, a once proud fortress that was sacked by Genghis Khan, I took the opportunity to capture this photo of Menna, who was stood recouping under the nearest, delicious portion, of welcoming shade – never has grey looked so good.

I love how despite the immense heat, scratchy dryness and travel tiredness, she remained incomparably optimistic, grateful and beautiful.

A photo that I love, a memory that I cherish, and a person I adore.
